Casting a telescopic rod is a little different from a traditional rod. It won't double-haul — instead you use water tension to pull line out, then roll cast or back cast to lay it down. On the forward cast, let the line slip slowly through your fingers rather than pumping your hands, and you'll still get a nice cast out onto the river.

A no-BS primer covering everything a first-timer needs: the three main fly types, how to read the water and find fish, and the two casts that'll get you fishing. Don't overcomplicate it — take these few tips and refine them over a lifetime, or just grab them and go.

If your fly line ever comes out of the rod, here's the easiest way to run it back through all the sections. Remove the butt cap, slide the sections off together, and feed the line down through the port. A length of thick line does the work of pulling the welded loop up through the tip.

Switch your reel between left- and right-hand retrieve without cutting your line or taking off your fly. There's a guide on the website to help you figure out which hand you are. Loosen the drag, strip off the line, swap the reel body and bearings, then wind everything back on.

The net opens easily with one hand — pull it out and you're ready to land a fish. To pack it away, it's a quick figure-8 fold:

1. Start with your hands facing opposite directions and grab the rim of the net.
2. Twist once to start the figure-8.
3. On the second twist, push your hands together — the net folds down ready to go back in its pouch.
