This is now the second review I've posted of this rod and I am more impressed!
Rod is stiff enough to handle some 5+ pound carp. This was my dad's first fish on the fly and he horsed it in more than he probably should have and I was honest a bit worried the carp would dive under the dock and snap the rod but it had enough backbone to keep it from going under the dock and we were able to land it. Very impressed by this rod. I've now caught everything from 6 inch grayling to probably 6-7 pound carp on it and the rod has been great.
Now I know it'll stand up to some steelhead in the fall!
I came across this rod on a Facebook page add and was skeptical because, well, Facebook add. Also I have tried telescoping spinning rods before and they were just not good rods.
However, I was planning a trip to Denali National Park and wanted a travel rod I could bring and cary with me. This rod fit the bill and had good reviews so I figured I'd take the chance.
It's the morning of day 4 on my trip and so far I've taken it on solo hikes in mountain creeks and a guided Artic Grayling trip. I was able to land the ~18 inch rainbow trout solo and about 15 or so grayling on the rod during the guided trip.
My guide and another guy on the trip were both intrigued by this rod during the trip and both asked to cast it so I let them. The other guy was very experienced and called the rod a "tenkara hybrid". He took some casts with it and seemed impressed.
The guide then tried it a bit and also seemed impressed. He actually hooked into a grayling but didn't land it (I think on purpose). He made comments about it being an interesting rod and how was probably better to fight fish on the reel rather than strip in line due to the line thru set-up. Said he would have to look into getting some for his guide trips.
I'm not necessarily a great fly fisherman but know just enough to be dangerous. The rod is easy to use and fish once you get used to it. It doesn't fish exactly like a standard fly rod but it isn't a standard fly rod.
Overall this product does everything it claims to do and does it well. Was worth the $300 price and if you're travelling somewhere remote and hiking some difficult terrain and want to fly fishing, this rod is perfect for that.
I really love this setup! I’m very short on time- during work breaks and 15-20 minutes after this Rod saves on setup and break down time. It took me a minute to get the casting down. I notice a little more friction which was to be expected ( I’m a beginner too)! I take it everywhere I go now!!
First time out this spring. Windy, cold, river was crazy high, got skunked! Normally all things that slightly annoy me, but today I got to try out the new rod.
I like how quickly it sets up, how smooth it casts - even on a double-haul. I'm used to a 9' 9# so this felt a little underpowered, but will be using it more for fishing smaller rivers and streams. And I can pack it on my adventure bike - best of both worlds!
Ran into an issue with the first rod - but customer service was awesome and sent a new one - Shout out to Tim!
Great idea - great product.
(Only thing I'd re-think is the fly attachment. It got hung-up in the neoprene sleeve.)
If you are looking for a rod that delivers the smooth, traditional feel of a classic bamboo fly rod, the First Cast Pro telescopic travel #4 wt fly rod is an excellent choice.
So I bought the fly rod several months ago and just had a chance to do some casting on the grass….WOW….pleasantly surprised!

Bought for my 12 year old son who loves to fish. We are constantly dragging along regular fly rods for the ‘just incase’ moments. This set up is perfect to bring everywhere. Easy for him to set up and bring in. Took it out for the first time and caught a good sized trout!
My first 2 times setting up were a bit slower than what it is now. Such a fun and quick rod! I hike or bike near many lakes and having a reel to cast properly is such a plus!
I am having a bit of trouble running the weighted section of the line when the rod gets a bit wet or dirty but if you keep that section outside the rod it casts really smooth!
Absolutely love the pole. What an ingenious idea. I was catching fish the first day I received it. I'm doing a long through hike, which is why I bought it, and it has replaced my other fly rod because your pole is so much easier to get to the good spots.
Was super excited to use this fly rod on my 3-week apalachian fishing trip but for the last hour since the leader broke and the line came out of the rod I can't for the life of me get it back in as it does not glide easily through the rod. Would be a lot better if I was able to contract the rod and still be able to put the line through rather than having it extended trying to maneuver it beyond frustrated
My only gripe is that I find it very hard to feed line through the rod sections on the cast, however, for a little travel packer, it's real slick. Takes up no space in the backpack and it seems very well built. Think like a tenkara rod with a drag system more than a bona fide fly rod.
My fly fishing friends are snobs and wanted to hate this rod...but changed their minds when I caught fish on it, and then asked to try it and THEY caught fish on it. It's a little less whippy and precise than a traditional rod but I got the hand of it quickly. The only weakness is feeding line through the rod on a good downstream drift...it's hard to strip line and whip the end fast enough to overcome the friction of the line passing through the hollow interior of the rod sections. Possible with practice, but not as fluid. For all other applications I thought it worked great. Fairly precise casts under overhangs, dry flies and nymphing, targeted casts to small eddies all worked fine. No one outfished me on the Deschutes and the rig landed 15" redbands with ease.
First time out, it set up very quickly and cast very nicely. Got stuck, but I wasn't being super patient. I'm used to a 9-weight, 9-foot pole, and this is an 8.5-foot pole that's a 6-weight, but I felt like I had really good control over where to place the fly.
It’s ok….. the line rubs on the opening to the center of the rod from the reel and slows the cast significantly. It’s a great concept, and looks cool. Probably best for small water and maybe a pond
I couldn’t wait for the fly rod to get here, haven’t got to try it out yet except in the yard. It’s even better than I expected, the quality is excellent and I can’t wait for spring to get here, the way it packs down means it’s going to stay in my truck until I get to the many fishing holes around here. I’ve dreamed of having an outfit like this since the 1970’s. Thank you Reyr gear.
Overall it does what you would expect it to. It is super light and feels well made, it collapses efficiently and does let you quickly set up gear to fish. I got it for bikepacking or small hikes where you may encounter fish.
However it doesn’t perform like a regular fly rod and the action is a bit stiff. Hard to mend line because of the friction on the line is higher, and also casting is more difficult and overall a fair bit worse than a traditional fly rod. I’d still get it again, just don’t anticipate it to have equivalent performance to your go-to fly rod
It is very small and is great for traveling and is easy to have handy for a spontaneous fishing trip. It is a little harder to cast than a standard fly rod and doesn’t shoot line as well. You have to get used to the smaller area between the line and the reel. Once you get adjusted to these differences it’s a pretty good rod and reel combination.
IN LOVE - Just wanted to say I am a complete 100% supporter of you guys! I can't stop bragging about my 6wt rod from REYR! I am currently in Montana and have used this rod 3 days in a row so far and am blown away. I love being able to pack it down when hiking/bushwhacking/river crossing. I caught some awesome fish on this to and the rod help up perfectly fine. You guys did a great job with this product and I really can't wait to get some more gear from you!

Excellent Product, Fantastic Warranty - I've had my Reyr Rod (6wt) since June '20 and its been a fantastic product. By far the best fly rod I've ever owned and been put to the test being packed into the Sierra's over the last 4 years. Easy fishing experience with this rod, easy to unpack and get going in less than a minute or two. Perfect as I've taught my kids to fish, because i can set myself up and fly fish, in between fixing their poles, super fast and easily. But the real reason I wrote this review was because I just broke my pole recently and Derek (Chief Fly Officer) quickly sent me replacement parts to repair the sections of the rod which were damaged. Amazing that now 4-years later, the warranty is still valid and with great service. I'm incredibly grateful - back out fishing again and just wanted to say thanks!
Fantastic rod and reel - Very pleased with First Cast, purchased for use as travel rod, tested it yesterday and performance was better than expected. I plan to always have it available as a second setup. Highly reccommend for both the pros or beginners.
Portability in the Price - I've had my rod for about 6 months now. I'll keep it short. Build quality is great: it's sleek and beautiful and the collapsing mechanism works great. It's a sleek design and is pleasant to look at. Price is obviously steep but you're paying for a new product that fishes in 30 seconds, truly. You are primarily buying the portability. Performance is perfectly adequate. It will cast all day long and not complain about it. You can not really haul effectively, there is too much internal friction when compared to external guides, it's just not happening. Don't expect crazy long casts or big hauls and you should be satisfied. If I want premium performance, and perfect casts I'll get my traditional rod out. If you want a go-anywhere rod that takes up virtually no space then get this. It's a perfectly good rod for what it claims to be.
Unbelievable 4wt Set Up - Was a little skeptical at first as I have some other telescoping fly rods with traditional guides and wasn't sure Reyr Gear would be able to engineer a guileless system with the sensitivity of a 4 wt and smooth line travel but they did and they did it perfectly. This set-up is unbelievable, light and nimble. It got delivered on Wednesday and I was able to sneak away on Thursday to go try it out. First couple of small fish felt great then landed a 17" rainbow and the rod came alive and handled this size fish with no issues. I would highly recommend this 4wt set up for everyday fishing, traveling, backpacking and any other adventure you can throw at it. Can't wait to go catch more fish. Thanks Reyr Gear for creating a killer product and a very affordable price.
Everyone needs this! - The rod was absolutely incredible in Belize. The convenience and ease of it is out of this world. You truly have a one of a kind product. I can't say enough good things about it. I want everyone to know about this rod. I think at the very least, every fly fisherman should have this rod for traveling. People could honestly carry this in a backpack on the way to work and let loose a few casts along the way. I love it,
Bought one, then another for a gift - This product fit a known need, but is so much better than I expected. I wanted something to throw in my backpack while biking, dirt biking, hiking etc. that goes everywhere I go. I wanted a single dry fly just in case there is some nice looking water deserving a few casts. And this rod does just that! Now I'm catching fish within 45 seconds and not distracting from adventure time with my friends, but still getting my 'fix'. It casts quite well and I recommend it for a gift for any angler in your life.
Intuitive - I have owned my REYR fly rod for about 10 days and have already taken it out on a couple excursions. Its small package size make it a no-brainer to bring along, and whenever the opportunity to fish presents itself, I知 ready to go. Expanding and retracting the rod is intuitive. To become comfortable with the process, I suggest going through expand/retract cycle a few times on dry land before you hit the water. Thanks for making this rod/reel available. It certainly expands when, where and how I fish.
Customer Service - I had one of the sections break and Derek not only responded quickly, he informed me that it was under warranty and a replacement would be sent. I received the replacement section within a few days. Great customer service with no hassles which shows he stands by the product.
